The Cassin's kingbird and the western kingbird are similar in appearance.

Many rare birds have visited the preserve including White Ibis, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Western Kingbird.

"That's a long-billed curlew," Mr. Veseth said, pointing to a large brown bird running along the ground with a long curled beak, "and look, a Western kingbird."

Western Kingbird, Western Wood Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Gray Flycatcher, Ash-throated Flycatcher, may also be seen in the summer.

Their official account of this expedition included the first descriptions of the coyote, swift fox, western kingbird, band-tailed pigeon, rock wren, Say's phoebe, lesser goldfinch, lark sparrow, lazuli bunting and orange-crowned warbler.

The Mourning Dove, Greater Roadrunner, Common Nighthawk, Common Poorwill, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Red-shafted Flicker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Say's Phoebe, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Cassin's Kingbird, and Western Kingbird are also found.
