Thanks to a rally on Friday, all three major stock market gauges rose for the first week in the last five.
It rose 87.50 points for the week, to 2,322.86.
But the smaller stocks, as measured by the Nasdaq composite, rose almost 4 percent for the week.
The workweek at factories, meanwhile, rose for the third straight week to what the department called a "very high" reading of 41.3 hours.
The Nasdaq rose 45.13 points, or 2.6 percent, for the week, ending at 1,810.45.
The number of claims rose by 43,000, to 429,000, for the week that ended last Saturday.
The Nasdaq composite index also set a record, rising 29.46 for the week to 1,467.61.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 48.45 for the week, closing at 1,635.77, a record.
The average price of gasoline has hit yet another record high, rising for the ninth week, to $1.53 a gallon.
Oil prices in London rose 16 cents a barrel for the week.
