This is followed by intense weakness in the proximal muscles of the lower limbs that can result in patients being unable to go from a sitting to standing position without assistance.

Trendelenburg gait: an abnormal gait caused by weakness of the abductor muscles of the lower limb, including the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles.

The muscular branches (rami musculares) are distributed to the following muscles of the lower limb: biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and the hamstring portion of adductor magnus.

Common symptoms of the disease are weakness and atrophy in the distal muscles of the lower limbs which progresses to the hands and arms, then to the trunk, neck and face.

Known as Nysten's law, this principle likely reflects the fact that rigor mortis - while affecting all muscles in the same way at the same time - becomes noticeable first in small muscle groups, such as those around the eyes, mouth and jaws, and becomes pronounced somewhat later in the larger muscles of the lower limbs.
