To the Editor: Your article portrays a Greenwich Village community that strongly opposes the Hudson River Park Conservancy's plan to commercialize their waterfront, specifically Pier 40.

A public-spirited citizen, Mr. Hecht was a patron of a number of city organizations, including the New York Zoological Society, Central Park Conservancy, the Horticultural Society of NY, and WNET/ Channel 13.

Instead of pouring city money into restoring this building, the parks department, with help from the Park Conservancy's women's committee, has found donors to pledge much of the $2.5 million needed for a more harmonious replacement.

The Central Park Conservancy?

A. The Central Park Conservancy passed along this answer from Bill Berliner, its director of horticulture: The trees on the east side of the reservoir are Yoshino cherry trees, and are now in full bloom.

To the Editor: Your Feb. 19 "Manhattan Up Close" on the Hudson River Park Conservancy misses the point.
