In 1982, North Caldwell became a township to take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies.

North Caldwell is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government.

Prior to the 2011 reapportionment following the 2010 Census, North Caldwell had been in the 27th state legislative district.
