A four-time participant of the women's Tour de France, Hughes has won the 1994 Women's Challenge and the 1997 Liberty Classic.

The Liberty Classic is an annual women's bicycle race held since 1994 simultaneously with the Philadelphia International Championship.

The Liberty Classic is the final leg of the inaugural 2006 Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling for women.
