He was the son of jurist James Gould, and an early contributor of tales to the Knickerbocker Magazine, to the New World, the Mirror, the The Literary World, and other journals.
After leaving the Herald, Cornwallis became editor and owner of the Knickerbocker Magazine and the Albion.
He contributed to the Union Magazine, the Knickerbocker Magazine, Putnam's Monthly Magazine and the New York Evening Post.
