IF you are approaching the Bishop Museum by car, soon after you pass Punchbowl Crater in downtown Honolulu you will begin to see tropical vegetation bordering the crowded lanes of traffic -flame trees, mangoes, coco palm.

The sandy, horseshoe-shaped beach was interspersed with sea-worn black lava rock and framed by a marching army of coco palms.
