Sierra stickseed is a perennial herb starting from basal patches of oblong leaves each up to 12 centimeters long.

Hackelia californica is a species of flowering plant in the borage family known by the common name California stickseed.

One of the best known species is the European stickseed, Lappula squarrosa, which is a notorious noxious weed.

Hackelia virginiana, commonly known as Beggar's Lice, Sticktight or Stickseed, is a biennial plant native to Eastern North America.

The fruit (the "stickseed") is a nutlet about half a centimeter long, covered with barb-tipped prickles that stick to almost anything (image at lower left), explaining the common name of this genus.

At the center, Dr. Sarah Reichard, a conservation biologist, studies showy stickseed, a rare plant in the Cascade Mountains of Washington; only 300 individuals are left in the wild.

The prevention of fire also allows a layer of nutrient-rich leaf-litter and other material to build up on the forest floor, allowing many other plants to grow and compete with the stickseed.
