A year later, she trained in Midwifery at the Saint Peter's Hospital at Chertsey in Surrey graduating in August, 1975 as a State Certified Midwife.

She came to Belfast to train as a nurse at Belfast City Hospital and qualified there as Registered Nurse and later at the Royal Maternity Hospital as a State Certified Midwife.

However, she decided that her vocation was in nursing and left the order (although she remained a deeply devout Roman Catholic all her life), qualifying as a State Registered Nurse and later also as a State Certified Midwife.
