The blackeye goby (Rhinogobiops nicholsii) is the only species classified under the monotypic genus Rhinogobiops.

This makes the blackeye goby the only known species of goby to be found in Alaskan waters, though the arrow goby (Clevelandia ios) and the bay goby (Lepidogobius lepidus) have also been recovered from northern British Columbia.
