Propyl acetate, also known as propyl ethanoate, is a chemical compound used as a solvent and an example of an ester.

The irritant effect of ethyl acetate is less strong than that of propyl acetate or butyl acetate.

The esters include ethyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, and propyl acetate.

The results for these binary mixtures are compared with those of ethyl acetate with benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and cyclohexane and of propyl acetate, butyl acetate, and ethyl butyrate with cyclohexane.

Reaction with acetic acid in the presence of an HSO catalyst under Fischer esterification conditions gives propyl acetate, while refluxing propanol overnight with formic acid alone can produce propyl formate in 65% yield.

Densities, viscosities, dielectric constants, and refractive indices have been determined for six binary mixtures of propyl acetate, butyl acetate, and ethyl butyrate in benzene and carbon tetrachloride at different mole fractions and temperatures.
