The unit cell of nickeline is used the prototype of a class of solids with similar crystal structures.

Accessory nickeline and gersdorffite are reported.

It occurs with nickeline, gersdorffite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, tetrahedrite and dyscrasite in hydrothermal deposits.

The primary problem for treating nickeline in conventionally constructed nickel mills is the specific gravity of nickeline versus that of pentlandite.

The region has been mined since Carthaginian times and the local mines, Minas de Cala are well known for the minerals Skutterudite and Nickeline.

This resemblance resulted in occasional attempts to smelt nickeline in the belief that it was copper ore, but such attempts always ended in failure due to high smelting temperatures needed to reduce nickel.
