Once the root sheath fragments, the dentin that later forms the tooth's root, comes in contact with the dental sac.

The primary enamel cuticle protects enamel from resorption by cells of the dental sac and also secretes desmolytic enzymes for elimination of the dental sac, allowing fusion between reduced enamel epithelium and oral epithelium.

After the initiation of the formation of dentin in the root area of the tooth, the root sheath disintegrates and moves away from the root surface so that the cells of the dental sac can come in contact of predentin to differentiate into cementoblasts and start deposition of cementum.
