The computer simultaneously calculates the difference between the right- and left-hemisphere signals, and uses this value to move the cursor right or left.

For example, an opcode from the group through (decimal 127), , typesets a single character and moves the implicit cursor right by that character's width.

Pressing Escape followed by A, B, C, or D would move the cursor right, left, down, or up, respectively.

"Trackballs have a longer learning curve, and people generally complain when they initially use them because it's so difficult to get that little cursor right where you want it," Dr. Rutter said.
