Basic construction of presses, types of compression mould and their relative merits.

Compression moulds work by taking the empty mould and placing a piece of unshaped rubber inside.

For low volume requirements it is more economical to build a compression mould than an injection mould.

A traditional compression mould contains a knockout box containing knock out pins and plates that move in unison.

Compression moulds are often used for proto-type mouldings, where samples are needed for testing fitment into assemblies.

Injection moulds work under the same principle as compression moulds except that instead of pressing the mould together on the rubber the mould is first closed and the liquid rubber is then injected into a fill hole drilled into the mould.
