In 1974, the school was named the University of Economics and was granted the authority to award the following degrees: doctor of economic sciences and doctor of commodity science.

During the academic year 2000/2001, the University introduced the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) at the Faculty of Management, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Commodity Science.

Originally-during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century-"pharmacognosy" was used to define the branch of medicine or commodity sciences (Warenkunde in German) which deals with drugs in their crude, or unprepared, form.
