Brasenia occurred during the interglacial of Europe, but like some other aquatic species, it does not occur there now.

Agricultural produce includes rice, apples, melons, watermelons, and Brasenia.

The family consists of two genera of aquatic plants, (Brasenia and Cabomba), totalling half-a-dozen species.

On the surface of the pond, phragmites and wild rice grow thick and in the water, there are brasenia, nymphaea tetragona, water caltrop.

Economically, Brasenia is cultivated as a vegetable in China and Japan (where it is known as junsai) and the mucilage it produces has been found to have anti-algal and anti-bacterial properties that may be useful as a natural weed control.

The native cat fish (Tandanus tandanus) which is declining throughout the Murray Darling Basin is now breeding in the wetlands and the Water Shield Lily (Brasenia schreberi), which incidentally is unique to Victoria, is also thriving in the Tahbilk wetlands.
