'Hairy leukoplakia' is a viral infection on the borders of the tongue or inside of the cheek.

Crenulated tongue - indentations on the lateral borders of the tongue caused by pressure from teeth ("pie crust tongue")

The slopes around them however, such as the border of the Tongue of the Ocean in the Great Bahama Bank, are very steep.

These lesions are generally less than 10 mm in diameter and affect non-keratinized mucosal surfaces (i.e. the labial and buccal mucosa, lateral borders of the tongue and the floor of the mouth).
