In 1965 it introduced bloodstock auctions at Park Paddocks, Newmarket, and in 1988 it also began holding auctions at Old Fairyhouse in County Meath, Ireland.

Coates is currently chairman of William Inglis & Son Ltd, a bloodstock auction and financial services company; former deputy chairman and non-executive director of David Jones Limited; and a partner in the Sydney law firm of Kemp Strang.
