block lava

South of the village lies a block lava field, another natural monument.

This kind of flow is called block lava.

Block lava flows are typical of andesitic lavas from stratovolcanoes.

Good examples of pahoehoe (ropey), aa (jagged), and some block lava are readily visible along with large rafted crater wall fragments.

Intermediate lavas form andesite domes and block lavas, and may occur on steep composite volcanoes, such as in the Andes.
