The Web3D Consortium has been formed to further the collective development of the format.

Browser makers can define their own component extensions prior to submitting them for standardisation by the Web3D Consortium.

Today, the Web3D Consortium is utilizing its broad-based industry support to develop the X3D specification as a successor to VRML for communicating 3D on the web, between applications and across distributed networks and web services.

CRC co-sponsored the Web3D Consortium's Software Development Kit, and chaired the Web3D Consortium's Conformance Working Group, giving both industry and the public a common set of functionality to strive for.
