Nechung Oracle

The Nechung Oracle in Dharamsala had been consulted on the matter.

The Nechung oracle is not the only means by which the Dalai Lama makes his decisions.

The Nechung Oracle is the State Oracle of Tibet.

It became the Lhasa residence of the Nechung Oracle in the 17th century, who was possessed by Pehar in his trances.

It is the spirit of this deity which possesses the Nechung Oracle or State Oracle of Tibet.

Upon the death of the Dalai Lama and consultation with the Nechung Oracle, a search for the Lama's yangsi, or reincarnation, is conducted.

The Dalai Lama has according to custom, a custom that has endured for centuries, consulted the Nechung Oracle during the new year festivities of Losar.

He is the Nechung Oracle of the Nechung Dorje Drayang Ling Monastery in Dharamsala, India.

The Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in northern India, still consults an oracle known as the Nechung Oracle, which is considered the official state oracle of the government of Tibet.

Prior to the Himalayan diaspora resulting from the annexation of Tibet by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the Nechung Oracle was the designated head of the Nechung monastery in Tibet.

The Nechung oracle has a history of false prophecies, including the repeated prophecy that Tibet would gain independence within a few years and also contributed toward the bungling surrounding the recognition of the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama.

Pearlman (2002: p. 94-95) describes the ritual investiture of the Nechung Oracle that is constituted by sacred symbols and iconography in the colours of the Five Pure Lights and Mahabhuta and includes lungta, bija and dhvaja:

It is about 10 minutes walk down from Drepung Monastery, and was the residence of the three-headed, six-armed Pehar, the chief protector of the Gelugs (Yellow Hat sect) and the seat of the State Oracle or Nechung Oracle.

In Tibet, the Nechung Oracle and other oracles on occasion, have also played principal roles assisting governmental decision-making and providing intelligence on pressing matters of state, and perhaps most importantly aid in the provision of security for the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Ngawang Yeshey Gyatso still held this position (though most Tibetans did not consider him to be a legitimate Dalai Lama) when a monk at Litang monastery, spontaneously channeling the Nechung Oracle, identified Kelzang Gyatso as the reincarnation of Tsangyang Gyatso.
