Kuril Trench

This earthquake was located near the junction of the Kuril Trench and the Japan Trench.

Connected with Japan and Kuril Trenches; provides good north south passage for undersea vessels between Sea of Okhotsk and Banda Sea N. Australia.

It runs from a triple junction in the Chersky Range in the west, to another triple junction with the Aleutian Trench and the Kuril Trench in the east.

The islands themselves are summits of stratovolcanoes that are a direct result of the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate, which forms the Kuril Trench some 200 km east of the islands.
