The routine polysomnogram includes the monitoring of electroencephalography, electro-oculography, electromyography, effort of breathing and air flow, oxygen saturation, electrocardiography, and body position.

Sleep was studied using electroencephalography, electro-oculography, and chin electromyography (Grass Instruments, Quincy, Massachusetts, United States).

The technology being developed by Professor Kaufman and a colleague in computer science, Amit Bandopadhay, is based on electro-oculography, a technique typically used by doctors to measure eye position in which the eye functions like a battery with the cornea and retina corresponding to positive and negative electrical poles.
