This "duck" was the Horned Grebe, who became the first to notice trouble.

The waters are especially hospitable to such duck species as loons, buffalo heads, horned grebes and golden eyes.

The Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) is a member of the grebe family of water birds.

The trips summon visions of urban birders leaping aboard with New York-minute metabolism: Take me to the horned grebe, driver, and step on it.

The most easily observed are the common loon, red-throated loon, horned grebe, red-necked grebe and western grebe.

Regionally threatened or uncommon species include Henslow's sparrows, American white pelicans, Forster's terns, Franklin's gulls, horned grebes, and trumpeter swans.

Along the coast near Port Arthur one can find pelicans, cormorants, Horned Grebes, orioles, Cape May Warblers, Laughing Gulls.

In winter, this small grebe is white with a poorly defined black cap, which distinguishes it from the crisper-looking Slavonian Grebe (Horned Grebe in America).

McCormick Island regularly supports thousands of waterfowl during the migratory season, such as the Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Lesser Scaup, and Bufflehead.

These records involve a total of about 120 individuals and the species is now much scarcer than the Slavonian Grebe, although des Forges and Harber recorded approximately equal numbers of each species.

Other water-fowl include Whooper and Mute Swans, Eider Duck, Slavonian Grebe, Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck and Wigeon.

As a winter visitor this species' distribution is very similar to that of the Slavonian Grebe, but there is now no regular wintering locality, although most recent records have been from the western end of the county and Rye Harbour.

It has been estimated that over 10,000 duck of fifteen different species breed round the margins and islands of the lake, as well as whooper swans, great northern and red-throated divers, Slavonian grebes and greylag geese.

The stream is, nonetheless, important for various birds, including Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, and Slavonian Grebe reported at Hjulsta Water Park.

Other, less common sightings included the Lesser Scaup, the Ring-necked Duck, the Slavonian Grebe, the Black-necked Grebe, the Long-tailed Duck, the Leach's Petrel and the European Honey Buzzard.

In summer the shallow lochs of the machair lands in the Uists and Benbecula provide for a remarkable variety of waders and ducks including Shoveler, Eider, Slavonian Grebe and the 'red-listed' Common Scoter.

Rye Bay is the most important locality for sea-ducks and divers, most Slavonian Grebes are found off Church Norton, mergansers off the Worthing area, and Great Crested Grebes off Brighton/Rottingdean and in Rye Bay.

The meres are important for wildfowl; gadwall, garganey and ruddy ducks are among the species observed at Quoisley, with great crested, red-necked and Slavonian grebes, great and little bittern, Canada and pink-footed geese, coots, moorhens and mute swans recorded at Marbury.
