It is the eastern counterpart of its relative, the Calandra Lark.

The song is like a harder version of that of Calandra Lark.

Smaller and more rufous than Calandra Lark, with much smaller black neck patches.

Differs from Calandra Lark most obviously in its much broader white wing-bar, but is also more rufous, especially on male's crown, has narrower wings and lacks the black neck patches.

Britain's third Calandra Lark found on St Mary's, Isles of Scilly (first record for the islands) on 26 April and stayed until 29 April.

The 'Calandra Lark', 'Melanocorypha calandra', breeds in warm temperate countries around the Mediterranean and eastwards through Turkey into northern Iran and southern Russia.

In spring 2008 a Calandra Lark was identified in April, and in May a Caspian Plover was observed, only the fourth such record for the UK.

The song is like a slower version of that of the Skylark, so musical to human ears that the Calandra Lark was formerly a popular cagebird in its range (Kikkawa 2003).
