Koechlin & Hyafil have proposed that processing of 'cognitive branching' is the core function of the frontopolar cortex.

The right hippocampus, right frontopolar cortex, and the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex are involved in future event construction.

Frontopolar artery (polar frontal): Arises after the orbitofrontal close to when A2 curves posteriorly over the corpus callosum.

The scans also showed that the imagery task performed after ayahuasca intake was associated with increased activity in the parahippocampal gyrus, which is involved in retrieval of autobiographical memories and encoding of contextual knowledge, and the frontopolar prefrontal cortex, which is implicated in working memory and imaging future events.

Cytoarchitecturally it is bounded on the rostral and lateral aspects of the hemisphere by the frontopolar area 10, the orbital area 47, and the triangular area 45; on the medial surface it is bounded dorsally by the rostral area 12 and caudally by the subgenual area 25.
