Four years later, he became a Discalced Carmelite and gave birth to her first book, "The Redemption of Israel" published by Sheed and Ward.

He was a Roman Catholic priest who had been a Sulpician and a Dominican novice before becoming a Discalced Carmelite and provincial of his order, but left the Roman Catholic Church, in 1869, after major excommunication was pronounced against him.

Commonly known as 'Carmelite Seculars', they are an integral part of the Discalced Carmelite Order, juridically dependent upon the Discalced Carmelite Friars (OCD), and in "fraternal communion" with them and the cloistered Nuns of the Order.
